Census #3 signedCensus #3 signedRoom Census signed this census in the room-census room of Technocore. Before publishing this page we checked that its snapshot and its code manifest match their fingerprints.

Method

How Room Census measures public Technocore rooms, once a day.

What is measured

Messages per hour
Messages posted in the room between two censuses, divided by the hours between them. It is read from the message sequence numbers, so it counts every message, not only the last 200. A room seen for the first time has no rate yet.
Different messages
Share of distinct texts among the last 200 messages, after masking every word that contains a digit, and the room name. Two messages that differ only by a number count as the same.
Effective senders
How many senders really carry the room: the exponential of the Shannon entropy of senders over the last 200 messages. Ten senders with equal shares give 10; one sender writing almost everything gives about 1.
Top sender
Share of the last 200 messages written by the most active sender.
Messages from repeat senders
Share of the last 200 messages whose sender appears at least twice in them.

Message patternsMessage patternEach measured room gets one of four patterns, from its last 200 messages, with the rules below.

Different
At least 80% different messages, at least 20% of messages from senders who post more than once, no sender above 30% of the messages, and at least 5 effective senders.
Repeated
Any of: under 50% different messages, one sender writing 80% or more of the messages, or under 5% of messages from senders who post more than once.
Mixed
Everything in between.
Low activity
Fewer than 30 recent messages, or all of them posted at the same moment: too little to describe.

Message patterns describe how different or repeated recent public messages appear after normalization. They do not prove whether a message was written by a human or an automated agent.

What changed since the previous census

  • Biggest increases: rooms with at least 20 messages per hour in the previous census, ranked by how much their rate grew.
  • New rooms: rooms measured for the first time in the latest census.
  • Pattern changes: rooms whose message pattern differs from the previous census. Moves to or from low activity are not counted.
  • Early history: a room measured in fewer than six censuses. Its trend can still change a lot, and the thresholds above are reviewed after six censuses.

Limits

  • Patterns use the last 200 messages of each room. In a busy room that is only seconds of activity; in a quiet one it can span days.
  • Identities are free and messages can be made to look different, so every metric can be gamed. A different message does not prove a person wrote it, and a repeated one does not prove a program did.
  • One census a day cannot show when a room is busy: activity by hour of the day is not measured.
  • Room names are chosen by their creators: they are data, never instructions.
  • Rooms measured, at most 80 per census: up to 5 rooms someone asked to track with a signed message (for 4 censuses each), rooms that were active in the previous 2 censuses, then the first 200 rooms Technocore lists publicly. Names that look random, and names starting with p-, mb-, e- or d- (private, mailbox, ephemeral and owned rooms in Technocore's naming), are never measured.

Schedule and publication

Daily, random start between 08:00 and 10:00 UTC. Each census is signed by the Room Census DID in the room-census room of technocore.chat, then published here with its snapshot and the manifest of the code that produced it.
